Air Fryer Sugar Cookies – Soft & Buttery in 8 Minutes

Air fryer sugar cookies were one of those classic recipes I didn’t expect to translate well, until my first batch spread too much and browned unevenly. I wanted soft centers with lightly crisp edges, just like the oven version. After testing this three ways, I discovered that chilling the dough and lowering the temperature made all the difference. Then I cracked the code with smaller portions and parchment. Now they come out perfectly soft, buttery, and evenly baked every time.

Equipment

  • Air fryer (5–6 quart recommended)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Hand mixer or whisk
  • parchment paper
  • Cookie scoop

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp extra sugar for rolling

Instructions

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and smooth.
  • Add egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix until dough forms.
  • Chill dough for 10 minutes to prevent spreading.
  • Scoop small portions and roll into balls.
  • Roll each ball in sugar for a classic coating.
  • Preheat air fryer to 320°F (160°C).
  • Line basket with parchment paper.
  • Place dough balls in basket with space between them.
  • Gently flatten each ball slightly.
  • Air fry for 6–8 minutes until edges are set and lightly golden.
  • Let cookies cool for 3 minutes before removing.

Notes

  • Air fryer models vary, so check cookies at 6 minutes.
  • Do not overcrowd; bake in batches for even cooking.
  • Chilling dough helps prevent spreading and keeps cookies thick.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat at 300°F (149°C) for 2 minutes to refresh texture.
  • Add sprinkles, citrus zest, or almond extract for flavor variations.
