Air Fryer Egg in a Hole – Crispy Toast & Perfect Egg in 8 Minutes

Air fryer egg in a hole was my fix for a breakfast that always seemed simple but never turned out quite right in a pan. The first time I tried it, the bread burned before the egg set properly. After testing this three ways, I discovered that lowering the temperature and pre-toasting slightly made everything cook evenly. The first few attempts were close, but adjusting the timing finally solved the issue. I finally landed on crispy, golden toast with a perfectly set egg that feels simple but reliable every time.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer (6-quart recommended)
  • Small glass or cookie cutter
  • Tongs

Ingredients

  • 2 slices sandwich bread
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon butter softened
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 2–3 minutes.
  • Use a small glass or cutter to remove the center of each bread slice.
  • Spread butter on both sides of the bread.
  • Place the bread slices in the air fryer basket.
  • Cook at 350°F (175°C) for 2 minutes to lightly toast.
  • Carefully crack one egg into the hole of each slice.
  • Season with salt and pepper.
  • Cook at 350°F (175°C) for 4–6 minutes.
  • Check that egg whites are set and yolks are cooked to your preference.
  • Remove carefully using tongs.
  • Look for golden, crispy edges and a firm egg white center.
  • Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • Use thicker bread slices to hold the egg better without tearing.
  • If eggs are large, crack into a small bowl first to control overflow.
  • Air fryer models vary, so check eggs around the 4-minute mark.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 1 day.
  • Reheat at 320°F (160°C) for 2–3 minutes.
