Chicken Lettuce Wraps – Fresh & Flavorful in 20 Minutes

Chicken lettuce wraps were one of those meals I kept ordering out because I couldn’t quite get the flavor right at home. My first attempt turned out bland and a little watery, which was frustrating. After testing this three ways, I discovered that cooking the chicken separately first and reducing the sauce made all the difference. Then I cracked the code with the right balance of savory and slightly sweet flavors, and now they come out fresh, crisp, and incredibly satisfying every time.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer (6-quart recommended)
  • Skillet or pan
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon or spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger minced
  • ½ cup finely chopped water chestnuts
  • 2 green onions sliced
  • 12 large lettuce leaves butter or romaine

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes.
  • Place ground chicken in the air fryer basket in a thin, even layer.
  • Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 5 minutes.
  • Break apart the chicken using a spatula or spoon.
  • Cook for another 3–5 minutes until fully cooked.
  • Ensure internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  • Transfer cooked chicken to a pan over medium heat.
  • Add soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger.
  • Stir and cook for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  • Add chopped water chestnuts and green onions.
  • Stir until evenly combined and heated through.
  • Spoon the chicken mixture into lettuce leaves.
  • Serve immediately while warm and crisp.

Notes

Air fryer models vary, so check the chicken at the 7-minute mark to avoid overcooking. Avoid overcrowding so the chicken cooks evenly. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat at 350°F (175°C) for 3–4 minutes. You can swap ground chicken for turkey or tofu, and add chili sauce for extra heat.
