Air Fryer Chicken Cordon Bleu – Crispy & Juicy in 18 Minutes

Air fryer chicken cordon bleu was my way of recreating that classic crispy, cheesy chicken without the mess of frying. My first attempt fell apart and the cheese leaked everywhere, which was frustrating. After testing this three ways, I discovered that rolling the chicken tightly and chilling it briefly made all the difference. Then I cracked the code with the right coating and temperature, and now it comes out golden, sealed, and perfectly juicy every time.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer (6-quart recommended)
  • Meat mallet
  • toothpicks
  • Mixing bowls
  • Tongs

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 slices ham
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • ½ cup flour
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs panko preferred
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Oil spray

Instructions

  • Place chicken breasts between plastic wrap and pound to even thickness.
  • Lay one slice of ham and one slice of cheese on each chicken breast.
  • Roll the chicken tightly and secure with toothpicks.
  • Place rolled chicken in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes to firm up.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes.
  • Place flour in one bowl, beaten eggs in another.
  • In a third bowl, mix breadcrumbs with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Coat each chicken roll in flour.
  • Dip into the egg mixture.
  • Coat evenly with breadcrumbs.
  • Lightly spray with oil.
  • Place chicken in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  • Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 10 minutes.
  • Flip carefully using tongs.
  • Cook for another 6–8 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  • Ensure internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  • Remove toothpicks and let rest for 3–5 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Air fryer models vary, so check at the 14-minute mark to prevent overcooking. Avoid overcrowding—cook in batches if needed. Chilling the rolled chicken helps keep the filling intact. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat at 350°F (175°C) for 5–6 minutes. You can swap Swiss cheese for mozzarella or use turkey instead of ham for a lighter option.
